Lydia Muell

Artist and jewelry designer Lydia Muell creates distinctive jewelry featuring her own handcrafted lampworked glass beads. Drawn to color, texture, intricate detail, and the transformative qualities of glass, Lydia combines traditional lampworking techniques with her own artistic vision to create beads and jewelry that are truly one of a kind.

Lampworking is an exacting form of glasswork in which rods of glass are carefully heated in the flame of a torch until molten, then shaped and wound by hand around a specially prepared steel mandrel. The bead can then be embellished using additional glass, color, texture, and a variety of specialized techniques. Throughout the process, the artist must carefully control the temperature of the glass. Once completed, each bead is annealed in a kiln to strengthen the glass and help prevent cracking or shattering.

An artist and maker by nature, Lydia first became fascinated with handcrafted glass beads after seeing a delicately hand-wound bead from Murano. A visit to a craft shop for stained-glass mosaic supplies soon introduced her to the remarkable world of lampworking and inspired her to begin creating her own art glass beads.

In 2006, Lydia left her practical day job behind to pursue glass bead making as her creative career. Her artistry soon expanded into jewelry design, where her handmade beads became the focal point of imaginative, richly detailed pieces. She has also incorporated her glasswork into bottle stoppers, fan pulls, charms, perfume vessels, and other decorative creations.

Lydia’s love of classical art and design continually influences her work, but it is the challenge of glass itself that keeps her captivated. She strives for harmony of design, balance of elements, and mastery of a medium that is both demanding and unpredictable. The result is work that celebrates craftsmanship, individuality, and the unique beauty possible when glass is shaped entirely by hand.
