This beautiful "Mother With Children" art doll was created by Julia and Lucia Friedericy. She is dressed in beautifully embroidered gold silk with vintage lace petticoat. Her daughter is also dressed in beautiful vintage fabrics and her perfectly detailed tiny baby is wrapped in a lace trimmed christening gown and peach silk wrap. This design, with the mother sitting, is approximately 17" tall.
This doll is our first of what we hope wil be many Friedericy Art Dolls to come. They are all charming, beautiful and wonderfully created. We fell in love with them at first sight. Their designs are wonderfully creative and their hand painted expressions are simply captivating. We will be adding more designs to this section in late April. They are well worth the wait.
Stunning, original, handmade works of art, Friedericy Dolls are one-of-a-kind, wax-over-porcelain art dolls. Never made from a mold-and therefore always unique in its appeal, every doll is hand sculpted by Judith Friedericy. Then each figure is painted, wigged, dipped in wax, costumed in fine fabric, again by hand, by Lucia Friedericy. The doll bodies are stuffed with muslin. The neck, head, arms, and legs are wax over porcelain. They are attached to the body with stuffed muslin and have poseable wire armature. Often the clothes are made from unique vintage fabric and elaborately embellished and are stitched onto the dolls and are not removable. The hair is usually made from genuine mohair.
The collaboration of the Friedericy family in doll-making has its origin and continued inspiration in the teamwork of Lucia Friedericy and her brother John, an acclaimed sculptor, painter, and lithographer. After John's untimely passing in 1990, their mother Judith Friedericy lent her sculpting talents to the collaboration-and a family tradition was preserved. Judith and Lucia Friedericy have been making unique dolls since the '80s. The mother; Judith, the sculptor, and daughter, Lucia, costumer have fierce and dedicated fans. Lucia once worked as an award winning costume designer for Hollywood. As artists, they have won many awards, and have been written up in many collector's publications. They live in California.
Their dolls have been collected by celebrities and exclusive collectors alike. The whimsical expressions, unique costumes, and props that often come with the dolls set them apart from other doll designers. They have delighted collectors world wide. They are considered works of art. Prized by collectors, the only way to get their older dolls are through collectors willing to part with them. They have a select few of Limited Edition dolls, which were strictly quality controlled by the Friedericy family.
Judith and Lucia have created several larger diaramas themed with classic tales such as Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes. Fascinating both in design and in detail, they make a dynamic centerpiece to any home. Theatrical characters, mythical figures, children's heroes and heroines-these are the inspiration of the classic Friedericy Doll.
